FAQs.

Which types of grasses does CIVITAS work best on?

CIVITAS is for use on a variety of grasses, including bent grass, rye grass and poa.

What is Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR)?

CIVITAS is the first commercially available fungicide for the golf industry based on the mode of action called Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR). It is a “plant defense activator” that turns on the natural defenses of the plant to fight off the fungus.

How does CIVITAS work?

CIVITAS first enters the plant through both the leaf and root systems. It then triggers signaling molecules that spread throughout the entire plant. These molecules “prime” the genes that produce a variety of antimicrobial compounds that can attack different fungi. When a fungal pathogen arrives and starts to attack the plant, primed genes are quickly and strongly turned on. At this point, the primed genes express many proteins that contribute to the defense of the cells. CIVITAS also has other effects on turf quality – You’ll see greener turf in just hours.

If it’s not a chemical, what is CIVITAS?

CIVITAS is a unique breakthrough in fungus control. Unlike traditional chemical fungicides, CIVITAS is not a chemical-based product at all. It is a synthetic isoparaffin-based formulation that actually helps the plant defend itself against fungus.

How does CIVITAS differ from other fungicides currently on the market?

CIVITAS is a proactive, fungus-preventing alternative. It’s formulated with 99.9% pure base oils and even contains elements that are designated for incidental food contact. CIVITAS eliminates the headaches that come with traditional, chemical-based fungicides. It delivers tournament-ready conditions for your course, but with NO resistance issues. Reactive, chemical fungicides with very specific modes of action are often at risk for developing resistance. Rotating fungicides with different modes of action from different groups helps reduce (but not eliminate) resistance. In fact, research has shown that pathogens have not been known to develop resistance to oil-based products.

What types of fungi does CIVITAS help control?

CIVITAS is for use on a variety of grasses, including bent grass, rye grass and poa, controlling the primary fungi that affect your course: dollar spot, brown patch, anthracnose, grey leaf spot, fusarium patch, leaf spot, powdery mildew, grey and pink snow mold.

Does CIVITAS help control other pests?

CIVITAS helps keep insects in check with each application: sod webworm, annual bluegrass weevils, banks grass mites, mealybugs, mites, cutworm, and fall armyworm.

Can I tank mix CIVITAS with other fungicides?

Studies have shown that tank mixing CIVITAS under severe conditions can provide significant cost savings. If using on rye grass, mixing with chlorothalonil is not recommended because conflicting modes of action can be detrimental to turf health.

How safe is CIVITAS?

We are in the process of applying for a new label rating from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We’ll let you know more about this new rating when we have approval to do so.

What company has developed CIVITAS?

CIVITAS is specially formulated by Petro-Canada – a global company that blends and packages more than 350 different specialty fluids that are exported to more than 60 countries on six continents. Products are manufactured from 99.9% pure base oils – among the purest in the world. Petro-Canada is the world’s largest producer of white oils, servicing a variety of industries including food processing, heath & beauty, adhesives and pharmaceutical, as well as over 20 years within the agriculture industry developing innovative spray oils. Petro-Canada specializes in offering customers quality products and technical service that help to increase productivity, contribute to significant cost savings and support environmental stewardship.

Is CIVITAS compatible with products other than those listed in the IPM program?

We are continually testing new CIVITAS tank mix combinations. As research reveals new compatibilities and synergies, we will provide this information to your distributors as well as on the website.

Are there potential resistance issues to propiconazole when it is included in a tank mix with CIVITAS?

Since the fungus is controlled (ie. killed off), we do not foresee any resistance issues when tank mixing propiconazole with CIVITAS, if used in a rotational IPM program.

Is CIVITAS effective on basal rot anthracnose?

Among others, studies conducted at Cornell University have shown excellent control of basal rot anthracnose. For further details, including research data, please refer to Dr. Frank Rossi’s segment on our webinar, accessible here.

Can CIVITAS be used to grow in juvenile turf?

CIVITAS is not currently labelled for use as a fertilizer. However, research studies have shown that CIVITAS strengthens the roots of turf, visibly improving the health and quality of the grass.

What is the minimum rate of CIVITAS that can be used before a visible decrease in turf quality compared to full label rate can be observed?

Depending on disease pressure and other local conditions, improvements in turf quality are generally observed starting from application at 7.25 fl. oz. / 1000 sq. ft. For best results, we suggest applying CIVITAS at the treatment rates outlined in the IPM program, accessible here.

When ISR is triggered in the plant, are the turf’s stores of carbohydrates depleted to fuel the immune response?

The carbohydrate cycle related to ISR is currently in university studies. Visually, there is no indication of carbohydrate depletion to fuel the ISR response. In fact, turf quality and health has been shown to improve with the use of CIVITAS.

Is CIVITAS compatible with DewCure?

CIVITAS and DewCure (or similar products) should NOT be mixed or applied sequentially as both products have repellence effects and will interfere with transpiration.

Can CIVITAS be sprayed without the Harmonizer?

No. The Harmonizer is necessary for proper function.

Does your testing of CIVITAS include growth regulators? Is CIVITAS compatible with growth regulators?

Yes, most tests were carried out with turf that underwent the same cultural practices used by golf courses including use of growth regulators. At this point we have testing showing compatibility with Primo, and testing is underway for other PGRs.

Are there any potential issues with combining CIVITAS with phosphites?

Currently we have seen no issues when combining CIVITAS and phosphites.

CIVITAS increases root structure in turf, is this because it is a fertilizer?

CIVITAS is not a fertilizer and has no nutrient value to the turf. It does not have any Phosphorus, Potassium, or Nitrogen in it.
